Kennan Long View Series | Germany’s Role in European Russia Policy: A New German Power?
Overview
“The Long View” is very pleased to host Dr. Liana Fix of the Körber Foundation and German Marshall Fund for a discussion of her book, Germany’s Role in European Russia Policy: A New German Power? (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021). Dr. Fix is a distinguished expert on Russia, on German foreign policy and on transatlantic relations. Her book is an in-depth study of both German and European Russia policies, incorporating security and economic concerns and placing these policies in historical context.
In this discussion, Dr. Fix will of course address Russia’s recent decision to wider the war in Ukraine, the course of the war itself and the implications this conflict will have for Germany and for Europe. At the same time, this conversation will be a chance to take a step back and to think in historical and big-picture terms about German policy, getting behind the urgent and immediate headlines and at the same time illuminating these headlines.

Global Europe Program
The Global Europe Program is focused on Europe’s capabilities, and how it engages on critical global issues. We investigate European approaches to critical global issues. We examine Europe’s relations with Russia and Eurasia, China and the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Our initiatives include “Ukraine in Europe” – an examination of what it will take to make Ukraine’s European future a reality. But we also examine the role of NATO, the European Union and the OSCE, Europe’s energy security, transatlantic trade disputes, and challenges to democracy. The Global Europe Program’s staff, scholars-in-residence, and Global Fellows participate in seminars, policy study groups, and international conferences to provide analytical recommendations to policy makers and the media.
