Beneath the Ice: Navigating Legal Frameworks and Collaborative Solutions for Subsea Infrastructure Protection in the Arctic

The Royal Norwegian Embassy and the Wilson Center co-hosted an engaging webinar to explore the crucial legal aspects of subsea infrastructure development in the Arctic. This event, which featured esteemed expert in international law and member of the UN International Law Commission Ambassador Rolf Einar Fife, offered an insightful examination of the challenges and opportunities within the dynamic subsea landscape of the Arctic.

As Arctic states increasingly seek to establish subsea infrastructure, the need for a robust legal framework becomes paramount. Promptly addressing legal gaps related to undersea cables and associated threats to these vital systems is imperative. This seminar shed light on the rights and obligations of states within the existing legal framework.

Ambassador Fife shared insights on the legal intricacies of subsea infrastructure development and discussed avenues for cooperation among Arctic states and resolving contentious issues in line with the principles of international law.

Global Europe Program

The Global Europe Program is focused on Europe’s capabilities, and how it engages on critical global issues. We investigate European approaches to critical global issues. We examine Europe’s relations with Russia and Eurasia, China and the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Our initiatives include “Ukraine in Europe”—an examination of what it will take to make Ukraine’s European future a reality. But we also examine the role of NATO, the European Union and the OSCE, Europe’s energy security, transatlantic trade disputes, and challenges to democracy. The Global Europe Program’s staff, scholars-in-residence, and Global Fellows participate in seminars, policy study groups, and international conferences to provide analytical recommendations to policy makers and the media.   Read more
